Riding the Crest tells of the tremendous challenges of living everyday in the wilderness traveling from point to point in order to reach a goal, much like the pioneers of old. Each day consisted of breaking down the camp, loading up her horses with over 200 pounds, and riding 20 or so miles to the next night’s camp, where Janice cared for her horses, set up her camp, and then took care of herself. She had to learn how to eat enough to have the energy to travel miles the next day, to care for her horses in an emergency when her supplies were limited, and to overcome the loss of all her hopes.

Riding the Crest reflects both the physical journey as well as the journey of life; choices made that directed the results, an outlook on life. Janice was raised camping and enjoying the outdoors but had never spent six months virtually alone in the wilderness. She was to discover whether her love of the outdoors was enough to see her through days in the desert, rain and snow below 30 degrees, and being lost without anyone to help. She was to challenge more of her own thoughts than she ever imagined.

Riding the Crest will appeal to those who know the Pacific Crest Trail, those hikers and riders who have ever conquered a trail, those who love the great outdoors, nature, and horses in particular, those who dream of traveling beyond their present boundaries, and anyone with a sense of adventure. The book is a unique photographic journal of an epic adventure.

Riding the Crest is 304 pages including 234 full color pictures.

I just read your book. Thank you for writing it. What courage and strength you have. After reading your book, I came home and gave our horses a treat. I am so sorry for the heartbreak you had to go through. Thank you for being inspiring and always looking for the bright sides of situations and for sharing your faith in God. You are an inspiration. Thanks, Ada D., Eagle, WI

Words can not express how much I enjoyed your book. I took it around with me all last week as we stayed a few days in the Smokies. You will never know how many tears will be shed for your two beautiful companions. Although I knew your loss, when I read about it, there was no way I could hold back the tears. It made me want to be there to hold you and help you carry the tack up that cliff. Now that I have finished the book, I do want to get it autographed before I share it with friends. Blessings, LaMerle E., Cleveland, GA

I did enjoy reading and underlining/highlighting your book. Wonderful pictures and a teary-eyed story to be sure! I've been showing it around and generating interest. This year there are two riders making the attempt, whom I met at Barrel Springs by-chance, when I was going out to help restock the Third-Gate cache. I gave them a water report and Trail briefing when I met them again at Warner Springs. Laurence P., Idlewild, CA

Last week, my buddy, G, bought your book, had you write an inscription, and gave it to me. I had been wanting to read it, but just hadn't found the time to go out and get it. G solved that problem.
When I first learned about your PCT ride a year or so ago, I was amazed and impressed. That doubled in intensity after opening your book. I really hadn't thought about the extreme degree of difficulty, logistics, a meager diet, etc. that accompanied this major ordeal. I am only a quarter of the way through, but felt compelled to write and say it is wonderfully written and all of the pictures really tell the tale. Well done!
Look forward to finishing it. Johnny N., Gainesville, GA

You are one AMAZING WOMAN !!! I started to read Riding the Crest yesterday after church ... I could not put it down ... I read all afternoon and into the evening and night! I was completely drained and yet completely full ... what an unbelievable adventure you had! When everyone said, "You should write a book." it was an understatement ... you wrote more than "a book" ... facts, figures, times, dates, trails, friends, feelings, love, history, horses, animals, AND Ralph !!!
You lived your dream - most people just "dream" ... yes, you are ONE AMAZING WOMAN ...
